India and Pakistan after 70 years of Independence: Reflections on Culture and Politics
11-12 December, 2017
This year, India is celebrating 70th anniversary of gaining Independence from the British, and Pakistan – 70th anniversary of becoming an independent country. Both countries – the relatively young political entities in South Asia, for strategic reasons are important not only in the regional, but also in the global context; they share common history and culture, but since 1947 follow different paths.
The occasion of this anniversary gives grounds for discussing various issues related to the history, the present, and the future of modern India and/or Pakistan. The main objective of the conference is, therefore, to enable the exchange of experiences and views of the scholars researching on modern India and Pakistan. We are interested in reflections representing cultural, political, religious, sociological, literary, linguistic, and interdisciplinary studies. The idea of the organizers, however, is to extend the scope of discussion also beyond academia. This is why we hope to be able to hear the voice of the invited writers, audio-visual artists, and critics from both the countries. We expect that this meeting would create an opportunity for fruitful dialogues on the condition of contemporary culture, in terms of both the regional and the global.
